Dacw 'Nghariad
Traditional Welsh Tune
Arranged by Ollie Lambert
6-parts - SATTBB
Dacw ‘Nghariad is a song about unrequited love. It tells the story of a mysterious admirer who watches an orchard to catch a glimpse of the captivating woman who works there. This song is a traditional Welsh folk ballad made famous by Mrs Mary Davies in 1908. She was one of the most accomplished sopranos of her generation, holding the prestigious title of fellow at the Royal Academy of Music. After a high-flying career specialising in the performance of folk ballads, Davies retired in 1901 to spend her time collecting the rare tunes of Wales before they disappeared entirely. She scoured the Welsh countryside with her gramophone to meet and speak to anybody who still had remnants of traditional songs. In this way she was able to help preserve a language and culture that was thought to be on the verge of extinction.
