Oh Where is the last track from Sam Amidon’s 2007 folk album But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted. Amidon’s haunting voice and piano cover is a curious ballad shrouded in mystery. While he was exploring one of his mentor’s attics he found the song in an unlabelled cassette tape in an old trunk. It seems that Oh Where is an Appalachian song - a traditional, varied style of folk music developed by migrant communities in the isolated east coast mountainsof North America. Since the 16th century Appalachia has been home to a rich melting pot of cultures that can betraced back to the British Isles, continental Europe, and Africa. The humble way of life in these mountainous regions allowed old folk music to flourish and develop into something new and culturally defining.
